The Birmingham History Center opened April 29, 2010, after a fundraising campaign in 2008 collected nearly $300,000 for initial exhibits and a move to the historic Young & Vann building in downtown Birmingham. The museum is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit sustained by corporate and private grants and tax-deductible contributions from individuals. The history center's main funding comes from a generous 10-year, $750,000 grant from the Thomas Jernigan Foundation in memory of Birmingham entrepreneur Thomas E. Jernigan, Sr. The grant is set to expire in 2017.
